Feb 1(Mon) Tar Sands Showdown: Canada and the New Politics of Oil in an Age of Climate Change with Tony Clarke, PhD, lecture

Canada's oil patch is booming. The Alberta tar sands have become the next big oil source for the United States, replacing Saudi Arabia. Within the next 15 years, Canada will be pumping four times more crude than today from the tar pits of northern Alberta into the US market. The tar sands are key to the claim that Canada is the new "energy superpower."
Canada's Black Eye: The Tar Sands as both an Ecological and a Spiritual Crisis in an Age of Climate Change.

Following the World Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December, we Canadians need to ask ourselves some hard questions. Why is the Alberta tar sands considered to be the most ecologically destructive industrial development on the planet today? Why is this bound to  pose a profound spiritual crisis and challenge in this country? What is the policy position of the federal government on carbon emissions and what action has been taken? What initiatives can be taken to challenge the tar sands mega project and to turn the corner in building a green economy in this country?

In the transition to a sustainable world, Aldo Leopold and Thomas Berry have showed the way.  The goal of priest, cultural historian and geologian Berry (1914-2009) was psychic - to draw on our spirituality to establish a new reciprocity between humans and the Earth. May 27(Thurs), "RESPONDING TO OUR WORLD IN TRANSITION"--an evening with Duane Elgin

The human community is moving into an unprecedented new phase as global "adversity trends" (such as climate change, energy shortages, and financial breakdowns) meet global "opportunity trends" (such as the communications revolution).  In this talk (combined with Duane's personal style of an occasional conversations with the audience), we will explore: How will life on the Earth will be changed a generation from now and how can we make sense of what is going on?  What key challenges and opportunities can we expect, both personal and collective, as we move through this time of local to global transition? What are the gifts that you can bring to this pivotal time?

May 29(Sat), VISIONING A PROMISING LIFE  IN CHALLENGING TIMES, A Workshop with Duane Elgin

To imagine a promising life, it is important to have sense of where are we and where are we going. The human community is moving into unprecedented territory as adversity trends (such as climate change and energy shortages) meet opportunity trends (such as the global communications revolution). A generation from now, life on the Earth will be changed profoundly. In this day-long workshop, we will explore how you can chart a soulful course through these difficult times. Specifically, we will explore four key themes:

Part I: Our World in Transition
Powerful adversity trends are pushing the human family to live together in a more congenial and sustaining manner. How severe and how urgent are these combined trends? What is the magnitude of change that we can expect? What can you expect are key challenges and opportunities as we move through this time of local to global transition?

Part II: A New World of Meaning
A new “paradigm” or way of looking at the universe is emerging; instead of viewing the world around us as mostly dead matter and empty space, the new paradigm sees a universe that is profoundly alive. How does this emerging paradigm shift how we see ourselves and find meaning in our life journey?

Part III: Tools for Imagining Our Future
We cannot create a future that we have not first imagined, so a next step in creating a promising future for ourselves is to discover the power of four “archetypes” or deep stories that bring meaning to both our personal and our collective evolutionary journey. We will then use these evolutionary stories to inform our personal life journey.

Part IV: Telling Your Story and Discovering Your True Gifts
With a better understanding of the big picture of change, we will explore the unique gifts that we each have to contribute to this time of transition as a human family.

Time:  9:30 am – 5:00 pm
Cost:  TBA
Location: TBA
